Long time no post.......

It has been quite some time since I have updated the Blog. A lot has happened. I have had a few more competitions since my last post, placed 1st or 2nd at every one in both Gi and No Gi, and I was often forced to compete in a much higher weight class.

I have had the honor and privilege to train with Marcelo Garcia, the current BJJ Worlds Champ and meet another one of Pedro Sauer Black belts Jeff Curran. It was an eye opening experience. My game has grown quite a bit this year. My confidence is at an all time high. I feel I have finally shed the last of the dreaded “Grapplers” ego some people have, and it has helped me mature on the mat. Know longer is every training session the Abu Dhabi trials. Realizing being tapped is learning, and always trying to submit every opponent is closing off my game, and not allowing me or my training partner to grow.

I have learned to recognize opportunity, know when to escape, when to be safe, when I am in danger, and when to attack. But mostly just trying to focus on the Fundamentals of Jiu Jitsu. Close the distance, achieve the clinch, takedown, establish position, mount, choke. This is what Jim teaches, and it has helped immensely. His philosophy on combat is so intriguing and his and Justin abilities to translate that philosophy in to tangible, practical method of demonstration and instruction has helped take our Academy to another level.

The Academy has been blessed to receive tons of new students and it seems the school is doing rather well. Jim and Justin have been drilling and focusing on self defense almost 100% of the time now. And it has done wonders for the school. Their instruction and mastery of technique is what is going to set us apart from the various McDojo’s around. Several of my friends have been promoted to higher rankings. All of them more than deserving of promotions. And Jim and Justin have both elevated their own game to new levels. Jim has high expectations for his students and I truly believe this is why the original crew is doing so well.

My own personal Jiu Jitsu has reached a level that I would have never thought possible 2 years ago. Just to be comfortable on the mat, being able to recall techniques, and explain to others and understand why they work. Jim puts such an emphasis on the details; it makes learning not only fun, but easier. I have found that I have to think a lot less about the actions and movements and have a much greater confidence in the techniques. I also feel that we have such phenomenal instruction at the Academy that traveling to tournaments and competitions makes you feel a step above the rest. You feel almost invincible because you know that you are learning in a manner that a lot of other schools are not. So it gives you great poise when competing and self-assurance when walking the streets.

Things have become so automatic that it makes you crave instruction so much more, because you have logged and committed to muscle memory so many techniques that you now have room for more details and more room for a deeper understanding of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Things are good.

This is such a wonderful Journey
